Feasibility Study

Building service feasibility studies

Got a big building services decision to make?

We can outline your options, compare benefits and downsides of each solution, give you our expert recommendations, and help you choose the best building services solution for your situation.

Too many options and not sure which way to turn?

We can help. We’ll understand your needs, research your options, present pros and cons, and rank them against your goals.

We’ve done feasibility studies for clients who wanted to:

  • Investigate options for getting rid of old coal fired boilers.
  • Understand if a solar system would generate power to pay for itself.
  • Manage a building services upgrade and identify the option that would cause minimal disruption to the people using the building.
  • Balance sustainable aspirations with budget constraints.

Sometimes with complicated projects, there’s no one solution that meets all your needs. So, we’ll find a way to identify the best compromise.

Feasibility studies help you make the right choice

When you’re in a situation where you've got to make a choice on the best way to go with your building services, a feasibility study will help you:

  • Prioritise your goals for your building services.
  • Compare building service options and make a well informed choice.
  • Understand whether what you want is feasible.
  • Find the best fit for your needs and budget or identify the best compromise.
  • Manage transitions with less disruption.

A feasibility study also gives you detailed information to take to your quantity surveyor, so they can prepare accurate budgets to help you decide.

The feasibility study process

Creating a feasibility study is an iterative process. We move through research, a long list, and a short list, before a detailed report. At each stage we review options with you.

  • Brief

Feasibility studies start with what you want to achieve. We create a list of building services criteria important to you. These can include:

    • Energy efficiency.
    • Reliability and quality.
    • Budget constraints.
    • Well tested technology.
    • Ease of maintenance and spare parts available in NZ.

As part of this, we’ll discuss your priorities, so we understand your must-haves and things you’re prepared to compromise on.

  • Workshops

If you’ve lots of decision makers involved in your project, we recommend workshops to understand all your requirements, so we only suggest options that will work for you.

  • Research and long list

We research building service systems and create a long list of options that may meet your needs.

  • Short list

We present the long list, summarise pros and cons of each option and identify those we think best fit your goals. Together we agree a short list to investigate in more detail.

  • Feasibility study

We produce a report that details the pros and cons of each option and identifies the best fit from the short list. If none are perfect, we’ll identify the ones closest to meeting all of your requirements.

This report helps you make an informed decision on which building services solutions are best for you. We can make recommendations, or simply outline the aspects of each option so you can choose.

The next stage after a feasibility study is concept design. A feasibility study narrows your options to two or three to study in a concept, which will help you make a final decision on which option best suits your needs.
